How to start a supplement regimen properly: mistakes to avoid
You have decided to start a supplement regimen: an excellent idea, provided you go about it the right way. Many disappointments stem less from the product than from how it is used. Here are the most common mistakes and the method to avoid them.

🔬 Mistake 1: Starting without knowing why
Buying a supplement because a friend, an influencer, or an advertisement mentioned it is the surest path to disappointment. A supplement addresses an identified need: insufficient dietary intake, a specific lifestyle (plant-based diet, intense sports), or a particular age or period.
🧬 Defining a concrete goal
Ask yourself a simple question: what do you want to support? Energy, muscle recovery, nervous balance, skin beauty? This clarity guides you to the right nutrient and then allows you to honestly evaluate what you observe.
🧬 Assessing your diet
Note what you eat for three days. You might find that the problem is partly solved on your plate. A panel of experts on multivitamin use points out that supplementation is intended to fill gaps, not to replace a varied diet. In case of lasting fatigue, also see Persistent fatigue: which deficiencies should you check?
🔬 Mistake 2: Starting everything at the same time
Initial enthusiasm often leads to starting five products on the same day. The result: at the slightest digestive discomfort or unusual sensation, it is impossible to know which one is the culprit. Conversely, it is impossible to attribute a benefit.
🧬 The one-by-one rule
Introduce only one supplement, keep taking it for two to four weeks, then add the next one if it is useful. This gradual approach allows you to adjust and identify what works for you. Our article Can you take several supplements at the same time? details common combinations.
🧬 Invisible accumulation
Several products can contain the same nutrient: a multivitamin, an energy drink, and a magnesium supplement, for example. Adding them together without reading labels can lead you to unknowingly exceed safety benchmarks. European authorities define tolerable upper intake levels for many nutrients (for example, 25 mg of zinc per day for adults).
🔬 Mistake 3: Ignoring dosages, timing, and interactions
More is not better. The dose indicated on the packaging is what the manufacturer declares within the European regulatory framework. Exceeding it does not improve the effect and increases the risk of side effects. A major review conducted for the USPSTF found little evidence of benefit for megadoses of vitamins in healthy adults.
🧬 The right time
Some supplements are best taken at specific times: magnesium is well-suited for the evening, vitamin C rather in the morning, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) with a meal containing fat, and iron away from tea and coffee. Our guide When and how should you take your magnesium? shows how to reason it out.

🧬 Interactions with medications
If you are on treatment (anticoagulants, thyroid, antidepressants, immunosuppressants), a supplement can interact. Athletes must also be attentive: the IOC consensus statement on supplements for elite athletes highlights the risk of contamination from poorly controlled products. Always talk to a healthcare professional.
🔬 Mistake 4: Expecting a miracle or giving up too soon
A food supplement is not a medicine. Its effect, when it exists, is gradual, subtle, and depends on your starting point.
🧬 Variable timeframes
Depending on the nutrient, it sometimes takes several weeks to judge. Creatine, for example, is judged over several weeks of training; a mineral like magnesium is evaluated over two to four weeks; a plant often requires more time. 🧬 Keeping a small journal
Note the time of intake, the dose, and your impressions (energy, digestion, sleep) once a week. After a month, these notes are worth more than memories. And if nothing changes despite regular intake, do not increase the dose: re-evaluate your goal or consult a professional.
🔬 Mistake 5: Neglecting the foundation (diet, sleep, activity)
A review study by the USPSTF concluded that for healthy adults, vitamin pills did not replace lifestyle habits in cardiovascular and cancer health criteria. The message: supplements are added to the fundamentals; they do not compensate for them.
🧬 What works with the supplement
7 to 9 hours of sleep, a diet rich in plants and quality proteins, regular physical activity, and good hydration form the foundation. Without this, a supplement struggles to make a difference. If you are an athlete, check out Which supplements for athletes?
🧬 Do not confuse quality with marketing
Learn to read a label: form of the nutrient, dose per serving, percentage of reference intakes, excipients, allergens. Our guide How to read a food supplement label gives you the method. Beware of promises of cures or quick results: they are prohibited for supplements in Europe.
🔬 A simple method to get started
Here is a four-step protocol, applicable to almost all products in our range as well as any other supplement.
🧬 The four steps
First, define your goal in one sentence. Second, check for contraindications and speak to a professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on treatment, or suffering from a medical condition. Third, start with only one product at the labeled dose. Fourth, assess after four weeks, then decide to continue, adjust, or stop.
🧬 Going further

✅ In summary
1️⃣ Start with a clear goal and a brief assessment of your diet.
2️⃣ Introduce one supplement at a time, respect the dose, and monitor for accumulation and interactions.
3️⃣ Give it time (usually a few weeks), keep a journal, and do not look for a miracle.
4️⃣ Diet, sleep, and activity remain the foundation; in case of doubt or if on treatment, ask a professional for advice.
