Preparing your immunity for autumn: the practical protocol

P
Pure Lab Nutrition

The first crisp mornings, the back-to-school season, the return of seasonal viruses: autumn puts our defenses to the test. Rather than waiting for your first runny nose, it is better to prepare for it now. Here is a concrete protocol, with no miracle promises, to approach the season on the right foot.

📑 Table of contents

  1. Understanding the immune system in two minutes
  2. Step 1: sleep and lifestyle
  3. Step 2: the plate, the first line of defense
  4. Step 3: vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc
  5. Step 4: moving, going out, and managing stress
  6. Practical calendar from September to November

🛡️ Understanding the immune system in two minutes

The immune system is not a switch that you can just "boost": it is a complex network of barriers (skin, mucous membranes), cells, and chemical signals that are constantly at work. Its proper functioning depends on multiple factors: sleep, diet, physical activity, stress levels, age, and exposure to microbes.

This is why a preparation protocol cannot rely on a single product. It combines several levers, each modest, whose cumulative effect makes the difference. For a general overview, you can also read our article Immunity: the nutrients that really count.

🧬 Why autumn?

With the cold, we spend more time in enclosed spaces, which promotes the spread of respiratory viruses. Light diminishes, daily routines resume, and back-to-school fatigue sets in. September-October is therefore a strategic time to adjust your habits.

😴 Step 1: sleep and lifestyle

This is the most underestimated pillar. Research in psychoneuroimmunology shows that sleep and the immune system are in constant dialogue: getting enough sleep supports the quality of immune responses, while chronic sleep debt degrades them (Besedovsky et al., 2019).

Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night, with regular hours, including on weekends. Expose yourself to natural light in the morning, limit screens late in the evening, and keep the bedroom cool. To learn more, read our article The essential role of sleep in immunity.

🥗 Step 2: the plate, the first line of defense

Before thinking about supplements, look at your plate. A varied diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, eggs, and healthy fats, provides most of the nutrients that immunity needs.

🍊 Seasonal allies

  • Citrus fruits, kiwis, peppers, cabbage: sources of vitamin C.
  • Pumpkin seeds, legumes, nuts, dairy products, meat, and eggs: sources of zinc.
  • Oily fish, eggs: sources of vitamin D.
  • Fermented vegetables, yogurt: allies of the microbiota.

Cook vegetables gently, consume them raw when possible, and vary the colors on your plate: each vegetable family provides different substances.

💊 Step 3: vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc

This is the heart of the matter. These three nutrients each have authorized health claims in the European Union: vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system.

☀️ Vitamin D: the phenomenon of waning light

Our skin synthesizes vitamin D under the influence of UVB, and this production drops in autumn and winter at our latitudes. Low concentrations are widespread in Europe (Cashman et al., 2016). A meta-analysis of individual data from randomized trials examined the link between vitamin D supplementation and acute respiratory infections: the overall effect observed was modest, and more pronounced in people whose baseline levels were very low (Martineau et al., 2017). These results suggest knowing your status before supplementing: seek advice from your doctor and respect the maximum recommended intake.

🍋 Vitamin C: a well-documented player

Vitamin C accumulates in immune cells and is involved in several of their functions (Carr & Maggini, 2017). It also contributes to protecting cells against oxidative stress and to reducing fatigue. Let’s be honest about what it does not do: the Cochrane review did not show that its regular intake decreases the number of colds in the general population, although it may modestly shorten their duration (Hemílä & Chalker, 2013). It is therefore nutritional support, not a shield. To use it correctly, see When and how to take vitamin C and Vitamin C cure: what you really need to know.

🔩 Zinc: a precious trace element

Zinc plays a central role in the development and functioning of numerous immune cells (Prasad, 2008). It contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system, to the protection of cells against oxidative stress, and to the maintenance of normal skin. Needs are higher in some people (plant-based diets, athletes, the elderly). Our article Zinc: roles, daily needs, and signs of deficiency details these situations. Always respect the indicated daily dose: prolonged excessive intake is not advisable.

✅ Our Zinc Bisglycinate at Pure Lab Nutrition: 15 mg of zinc per day in bisglycinate form, with vitamins B6 and C, to contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system.

🚶 Step 4: moving, going out, and managing stress

Moderate and regular physical activity (brisk walking, cycling, swimming, strength training) is associated with better overall functioning of the body. Going out every day, even in gray weather, provides natural light, which also helps to regulate the biological clock.

🧘 Chronic stress, the discreet enemy

Prolonged stress is accompanied by lower quality sleep and less rigorous dietary habits. Breathing, cardiac coherence, breaks, hobbies, social time: these simple reflexes count just as much as a supplement. Add to this the classic barrier gestures: hand washing, ventilating rooms, and staying up to date with vaccinations recommended by your doctor.

🗓️ Practical calendar from September to November

  • September: restore regular sleep schedules, return to seasonal shopping, plan your physical activities.
  • October: check in with your doctor or pharmacist (vitamin D, vaccines), then start a short, targeted course if needed.
  • November: re-evaluate: how are you sleeping, how are you feeling, what can you adjust?

If you take several products, read Can you take several supplements at the same time? to avoid duplicates or unnecessary combinations.

⚠️ When to consult?

Recurring infections, persistent fever, a cough that lingers for more than a few weeks, or unexplained fatigue warrant a medical consultation. No supplement is a substitute for medical advice or treatment.

✅ In summary

1️⃣ Immunity relies on a set of factors: sleep, diet, activity, stress management, above all supplements.
2️⃣ Vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc contribute to the normal functioning of the immune system as part of a varied diet.
3️⃣ It is better to know your vitamin D status and respect dosages rather than supplementing blindly.
4️⃣ September to November is the right window to set your habits and check in with a healthcare professional.
