Beauty routine from within: skin, hair, and nails
Does your beauty routine stop at your bathroom door? Creams and serums work on the surface. But skin, hair, and nails are also built from within, based on what we eat, our sleep, and our lifestyle.
At Pure Lab Nutrition, we help you build a consistent beauty routine without stacking products. Here is how skin, hair, and nails renew themselves, the nutrients that matter, what studies say, routines based on your priorities, and mistakes to avoid.

Understanding what happens beneath the surface
Skin, hair, and nails have one thing in common: they are tissues that constantly renew themselves from cells dividing in the deeper layers. What you see today was formed several weeks or even several months ago in the case of hair length. This is why an "inner" routine should always be judged over the long term.
🧱 The skin, a support tissue
Below the epidermis, the dermis is supported by a network of fibers, including collagen, and molecules that retain water, such as hyaluronic acid. Sun, tobacco, and aging weaken this network. Diet provides the building blocks (proteins) and cofactors (vitamin C, zinc) necessary for its maintenance.
💇 Hair and nails, keratin structures
Hair and nails are mainly composed of keratin, a protein. The hair follicle is a highly active tissue that reacts quickly to imbalances: a diet that is too strict, a lack of protein, or a period of stress is often first visible in the hair, with a lag of several weeks.
First, your plate
Above all, before taking any supplement, skin, hair, and nails need a sufficient intake of proteins (meat, fish, eggs, legumes), fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C, and sources of zinc and selenium (seafood, nuts, whole grains). A very restrictive diet is often first seen in the hair and nails.
Sleep, hydration, stopping smoking, and sun protection complete the foundation. Supplements come next, to target a specific need.
For the skin
✨ Collagen + vitamin C
In 2023, a meta-analysis published in Nutrients, covering 26 randomized trials and over 1,700 participants, showed that hydrolyzed collagen improved skin hydration and elasticity compared to a placebo. Collagen does not have an authorized health claim: these study results should be read as such, with their limitations (different products, doses, and durations from one trial to another). Pair it with vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin. Read Collagen and Vitamin C: Why pair them?
💧 Hyaluronic acid
Naturally present in the skin, it retains water. Its oral intake has been the subject of studies, including a publication in 2014 in the Nutrition Journal (Kawada et al.) focused on dry skin. Data remains more limited than for collagen, and it does not have an authorized health claim. Read Hyaluronic acid capsules: effective for the skin?
🛡️ Zinc
It contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and to the protection of cells against oxidative stress. Seafood, meat, legumes, and nuts are good dietary sources: consider this before considering a supplement.
☀️ What no supplement can replace
Sun protection remains the most effective action to preserve skin capital. No nutrient can compensate for sun exposure without protection, nor for smoking. Also, remember to distinguish between dry skin and dehydrated skin: one lacks lipids, the other lacks water, and the care required is not the same.
For the hair
Three nutrients have a recognized health claim for the maintenance of normal hair: biotin, zinc, and selenium. Caution: biotin has only shown a clear benefit in people who are deficient (Patel et al., 2017). For someone whose intake is already sufficient, do not expect miracles. To learn more, read Is biotin really effective?
🧪 Biotin and blood tests
The U.S. FDA has reminded clinicians that biotin can interfere with certain laboratory tests, notably troponin tests used in cardiology. If you take biotin, always inform your doctor or the lab before a blood test.
🚨 When hair loss requires medical advice
Losing hair every day is normal, and more noticeable shedding during certain seasons or a few months after a period of fatigue, a pregnancy, or a diet is common. However, sudden shedding, hair loss in patches, or loss accompanied by itching or other symptoms (intense fatigue, menstrual issues) should be shown to a doctor. An assessment can then look for a specific cause, which one cannot fix "blindly" with a supplement.
For the nails
Zinc and selenium contribute to the maintenance of normal nails. Brittle nails often also have external causes: repeated contact with water and detergents, harsh nail polish removers. Wear gloves for washing dishes, limit acetone-based removers, and moisturize your hands and cuticles in the evening. If your nails are brittle or ridged, read Brittle or ridged nails: causes and solutions.
A nail takes time to grow back completely: improvement, if it comes, appears first at the base of the nail, near the cuticle. A change in color or shape that persists for no apparent reason should be shown to a professional.

Building your routine
✅ Skin priority: collagen + vitamin C, potentially hyaluronic acid
✅ Hair and nail priority: biotin + zinc + selenium
✅ Watch out for duplicates: if you are already taking a multivitamin, check its zinc and biotin content
✅ Patience: allow several weeks for the skin, hair, and nails to renew
✅ Hydration, sleep, sun protection remain essential
| Your priority | Our suggestion | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Skin | Marine Collagen Instant+ (Naticol® collagen types I and III + vitamin C) | 1,000 mg/day, 15-day course |
| Skin hydration | Hyaluronic Acid Instant+ (hyaluronic acid + vitamin C) | 1 capsule/day, 30-day course |
| Hair and nails | Biotin Instant+ (biotin + zinc bisglycinate + selenium) | Follow the label |
📅 An eight-week routine
Weeks 1 and 2: Assess your diet (a source of protein at every meal, colorful fruits and vegetables), start wearing gloves for washing dishes, and use daily sun protection. Start only one supplement, the one that matches your priority.
Weeks 3 to 6: Maintain regular intake at the same time every day. If you have a dual priority (skin and hair), this is the time to add the second product, after checking for duplicates.
Weeks 7 and 8: Compare with your starting photos, taken under the same lighting, and decide whether to continue, adapt, or stop.
🤔 Two concrete examples
Manon, 34, finds her skin dull and her nails fragile. Rather than buying everything, she starts with a course of collagen + vitamin C, wears gloves for dishes, and checks that her multivitamin does not already contain zinc before considering biotin.
Karim, 41, notices thinner hair after a period of intense work and an improvised diet. He reintroduces proteins at every meal, consults his doctor to rule out a specific cause, then considers a biotin + zinc + selenium formula, informing them of the biotin before his next blood test.

Myths and reality
❌ "More biotin, more hair": the benefit has only been shown in people who are deficient.
❌ "Swallowed collagen goes directly into the skin": it is digested into small fragments, like any protein. Studies measure an overall effect on the skin, not a direct "transfer."
❌ "Supplements make up for a sunburn": no, only sun protection limits the damage.
Common mistakes
❌ Combining biotin, zinc, and multivitamins without checking total doses
❌ Judging after ten days: hair and nails grow slowly
❌ Forgetting sun protection while relying on supplements
❌ Forgetting to report biotin before a blood test
❌ Ignoring significant hair loss: it deserves a medical opinion
Frequently asked questions
❓ Can you combine collagen and biotin?
Yes, they do not have the same role. Simply check that you are not stacking the same nutrient (zinc, biotin) in several products.
❓ How long until you see a change?
Allow several weeks for the skin, and longer for hair and nails. To learn more, read How long does it take to see the effects of a supplement?
❓ Do supplements replace skin care?
No. They complement a skincare routine adapted to your skin type, without replacing it.
❓ During pregnancy?
Always ask your doctor or midwife for advice before starting or continuing a supplement during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
