Hair and dietary supplements: what really works

P
Pure Lab Nutrition

Store shelves are overflowing with supplements promising stronger, thicker hair. Between marketing and science, how do you find your way? Here is what the sources say, what European regulations actually allow us to claim, and how to choose an effective hair supplement without being misled.

📑 Summary

  1. How does hair work?
  2. Biotin: what we really know
  3. Zinc: a mineral for hair maintenance
  4. Iron: a status to be evaluated
  5. Collagen: what can we say about it?
  6. How to judge a hair supplement

🔬 How does hair work?

Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a protein produced in the hair follicle. This follicle is one of the fastest-renewing tissues in the body, which explains its sensitivity to deficiencies and periods of stress or fatigue. The hair cycle consists of a growth phase (lasting several years), a transition phase, and a shedding phase.

🧬 Hair loss does not always have the same cause

Diffuse hair loss can stem from a deficiency, significant stress, hormonal changes, a highly restrictive diet, or a thyroid condition. Localized or patchy hair loss stems from very different causes. If hair loss is sudden or significant, consult a doctor or dermatologist: a supplement is not the answer to every situation. Our article Brittle, dry, and dull hair: which supplements to use? explores common cases.

🔬 Biotin: what we really know

Biotin (vitamin B8) is the star of hair supplements. In accordance with Regulation (EU) No 432/2012, biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and normal skin. This claim is valid for a normal dietary intake: it does not mean that biotin makes hair grow faster.

🧬 What the reviews show

Patel, Swink, and Castelo-Soccio (2017) reviewed publications on biotin and hair loss. Their conclusion is nuanced: cases of improvement mainly concern individuals with a proven biotin deficiency, which is a rare situation, and evidence in people without a deficiency remains limited. Almohanna et al. (2019) reached similar conclusions for several vitamins and minerals: the value of supplementation is primarily established in cases of deficiency.

🧬 Beware of blood tests

High consumption of biotin can skew certain biological readings (for example, thyroid or cardiac tests). Always inform the laboratory and your doctor if you are taking it. More details in Biotin: really effective for hair and nails?.

🔬 Zinc: a mineral for hair maintenance

Zinc is involved in protein synthesis and cell division, two processes essential for a rapidly renewing tissue like the hair follicle. Regulation (EU) No 432/2012 authorizes the following claim: zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, as well as normal skin and nails.

🧬 What the literature says

Guo and Katta (2017) examined the role of nutrition in hair loss. They report that low zinc levels have been observed in some people experiencing hair loss, but that supplementation is only useful in cases of proven deficiency, and that excess zinc can itself be problematic. Remember that it is better to aim for reference intake levels rather than high doses. Also see The benefits of zinc for skin and hair.

🔬 Iron: a status to be evaluated

Iron deficiency is often cited in cases of hair loss, particularly in women. Rushton (2002) and Almohanna et al. (2019) discuss the link between iron status, particularly ferritin, and hair loss, while acknowledging that ideal thresholds remain debated. It should be noted that Regulation (EU) No 432/2012 does not authorize a specific hair-related claim for iron: it authorizes claims regarding the reduction of fatigue, normal oxygen transport, and normal red blood cell formation.

🧬 No "blind" iron supplementation

Excess iron is potentially dangerous. Only a blood test (ferritin, hemoglobin) can determine if supplementation is useful, and the decision should be made with a healthcare professional. We do not offer an iron product in our range, and we invite you to check your status first.

🔬 Collagen: what can we say about it?

Collagen is very abundant in the skin, where follicles are located. Collagen peptides have been primarily studied for their effects on the skin: Proksch et al. (2014) observed in a controlled trial changes in the elasticity and density of the dermal matrix using specific peptides. Conversely, we are not aware of high-quality clinical trials demonstrating a direct effect of collagen on hair growth or hair loss, and no health claim is authorized in the European Union for collagen.

🧬 A supportive role to be viewed honestly

Collagen is a source of protein: it can be integrated into an "inner beauty" routine without making promises regarding hair. To learn more, read Marine collagen: its role in hair health.

🔬 How to judge a hair supplement

When faced with a promise, a few simple reflexes help separate the useful from the superfluous.

🧬 Criteria to check

Look at the doses relative to reference intakes, avoid "miracle" formulas with dozens of ingredients, and be wary of promises of rapid results. Hair grows by about one centimeter per month: you must allow for several months before judging. Our guide Inner beauty routine proposes a comprehensive approach.

🧬 The general framework

Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose, and seek advice from a healthcare professional in case of doubt.

✅ In summary

1️⃣ Biotin and zinc contribute to the maintenance of normal hair, but their utility is primarily established in cases of insufficient intake.
2️⃣ Iron should only be supplemented after a blood test and medical advice.
3️⃣ Collagen has no authorized claims and little direct evidence regarding hair.
4️⃣ Patience and consistency: several months are necessary to judge any change.
