The benefits of zinc for skin and hair
Skin that blemishes, hair that lacks shine, brittle nails: what if part of the answer was on your plate? Among beauty nutrients, zinc occupies a special place: it is one of the few to have official health claims for the skin, hair, and nails.
At Pure Lab Nutrition, we believe in beauty that is built from within. Here is what zinc can actually do for your skin and hair, what it cannot do, and how to intelligently incorporate it into your routine.

Zinc and the skin
✅ An officially recognized role
Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal skin: this is an authorized health claim at the European level. It also helps protect cells against oxidative stress, one of the factors of skin aging.
🔬 What studies on imperfections show
A meta-analysis published in 2020 in Dermatologic Therapy (Yee et al.) reviewed zinc and acne:
- people suffering from acne had, on average, lower blood levels of zinc than others
- in patients treated with zinc, the number of inflammatory lesions decreased more significantly
To understand clearly: these results concern acne, a medical condition, often involving medical doses and supervision. A dietary supplement does not treat acne: in the case of persistent acne, consult a dermatologist. We detail this topic in our article Zinc and acne: what can you really expect?
💧 What about dry skin?
Zinc is not a "moisturizer." Skin that feels tight primarily requires proper external care and simple habits (less hot showers, adapted cream). To distinguish between dry skin and dehydrated skin, read our dedicated guide.
Zinc and the hair
✅ A key nutrient for hair
Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair. It also contributes to the normal metabolism of macronutrients, including proteins like keratin, the protein that makes up the majority of the hair fiber.
🔬 Zinc and hair loss
A Korean study published in 2013 in the Annals of Dermatology (Kil et al.) measured blood zinc in 302 people suffering from hair loss and compared it to a control group:
- the average zinc level was lower in all types of hair loss studied
- the gap was most marked for alopecia areata and diffuse hair loss (telogen effluvium)
To be qualified: this study shows an association, not that zinc makes hair grow back. Hair loss has many causes (hormonal, genetic, stress, iron deficiency…): significant or sudden hair loss warrants medical advice.
Zinc and the nails
Zinc also contributes to the maintenance of normal nails. Like hair, nails are made of keratin. Nails that split or break easily can have external causes (household products, nail polish, water), but diet also counts. Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning, limit harsh polish removers, and moisturize your hands: these simple gestures often make a real difference.

Integrating zinc into your beauty routine
🍽️ Start with your plate
Oysters, seafood, meat, eggs, cheese, pumpkin seeds, and legumes are good sources of zinc. A varied diet remains the foundation.
💊 Then, supplement if necessary
- Choose a well-absorbed form, such as bisglycinate
- Be patient: skin renews itself in a few weeks, hair grows slowly; count on at least 2 to 3 months of consistency
- Do not combine multiple supplements containing zinc
📝 An example routine
Let’s imagine Sarah, 34, who finds her hair duller after a busy winter. She starts by reviewing her plate (eggs, fish, pumpkin seeds), protects her lengths from the heat of the straightener, and chooses a single formula adapted to her goal, taken each morning at breakfast. She takes a photo of her hair at the beginning and checks in again three months later, rather than judging after ten days.
🤝 Good partners
Biotin and selenium also contribute to the maintenance of normal hair, and vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation to ensure the normal function of the skin. Marine collagen often complements beauty routines: discover its role in hair health.

Beware of duplication: Biotin Instant+ already contains zinc. If you take it, there is no need to add an extra zinc supplement.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying beauty formulas: many contain zinc, and doses add up
- Expecting results in a few days: the hair cycle and skin renewal take time
- Neglecting external care: a supplement does not compensate for repeated aggressions (heat, harsh products)
- Delaying a consultation in case of marked acne or sudden hair loss
Frequently asked questions
❓ Does zinc make hair grow faster?
No. Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, but no nutrient accelerates growth beyond its natural rhythm.
❓ How long before seeing a difference?
Count on at least 2 to 3 months of regular intake, combined with a varied diet. To learn more, read How long until you see the effects of a supplement?
❓ Can zinc and collagen be combined?
Yes, these are two complementary approaches. Just check that you are not combining several sources of zinc.
