Ashwagandha and sleep: what studies really say

A
Adam DALI

Do you spend hours trying to fall asleep, or do you wake up tired despite a full night’s sleep? You have surely already heard of ashwagandha as a sleep aid. Its Latin name, Withania somnifera, actually means "sleep-inducing." But a nice name is not evidence.

At Pure Lab Nutrition, we prefer studies over promises. Here is what research actually shows about ashwagandha and sleep, including its strengths, limitations, and practical advice for incorporating it into your evening routine without expecting the impossible.

Stress and sleep: a vicious cycle

Stress is one of the primary enemies of sleep. Racing thoughts, nervous tension, difficulty "switching off": falling asleep becomes difficult. And poor-quality sleep, in turn, makes you more sensitive to stress the next day.

It is precisely this link that has been studied regarding ashwagandha: rather than acting as a "sleeping pill," researchers have observed its effect on stress and anxiety, which weigh on sleep quality.

🧘 The starting point: studies on stress

Before looking directly at sleep, researchers first tested ashwagandha on stress. In 2012, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine (Chandrasekhar et al.) followed stressed adults for 60 days. The ashwagandha group saw their perceived stress level and their cortisol (the stress hormone) levels decrease more than the placebo group. It is this type of result that led to questioning whether nights could also benefit from it.

The clinical trial on insomnia

🔬 The protocol

In 2019, an Indian team (Langade et al.) published a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in the journal Cureus:

  • 60 adults aged 18 to 60 suffering from insomnia
  • 300 mg of KSM-66® root extract twice daily (totaling 600 mg per day), or a placebo
  • 10 weeks of follow-up
  • Sleep measured via actigraphy (a wrist-worn sensor), not just questionnaires

📊 The results

After 10 weeks Ashwagandha Placebo
Sleep onset latency 29 min 34 min
Sleep efficiency 83.5% 79.7%
Total sleep time 312 min 292 min

Initially, both groups took about 42 minutes to fall asleep. The differences compared to the placebo are statistically significant for sleep onset latency and sleep efficiency. For total sleep time, the observed gap did not reach the threshold of statistical significance. No adverse effects were reported during the study.

🧐 How to interpret these figures?

Note that the placebo group also improved. This is very common in sleep studies: simply being monitored, paying attention to one’s nights, and following a protocol already helps. The value of a placebo-controlled trial is precisely to measure what ashwagandha brings in addition. Here, the gap is real but on the order of a few minutes of sleep onset: a helping hand, not a radical transformation.

The 2021 meta-analysis

A single study is never enough. That is why the meta-analysis published in 2021 in PLoS ONE (Cheah et al.) is so useful: it pooled 5 randomized trials and 400 participants.

✅ Its conclusions

  • A small but significant effect of ashwagandha on overall sleep
  • An improvement in alertness upon waking and anxiety levels
  • A clearer effect in individuals suffering from insomnia, at doses of at least 600 mg per day, and for 8 weeks or more
  • No serious adverse effects reported in the included trials

Limitations to be aware of

In the interest of honesty, here is what these studies do not say:

  • Small-scale studies: a few dozen to a few hundred participants
  • Little long-term perspective: the authors of the meta-analysis call for more safety data
  • A modest effect: ashwagandha is not a sleeping pill and does not replace medical management of insomnia
  • Precautions: in 2024, the French ANSES advised against the use of ashwagandha for pregnant or breastfeeding women, minors, people with thyroid, liver, or heart disorders, and those taking sedative medications

It must also be remembered that no health claim is currently authorized in the European Union for ashwagandha: we are therefore discussing observed studies and results, not guaranteed effects. If your sleep disturbances have lasted more than three months or affect your daily life, speak to your doctor.

How to use it for sleep?

🌙 Our practical advice

  • Take it in the evening, with dinner, if your main goal is sleep
  • Be consistent: the observed effects appear over the weeks, not from the first night
  • Follow the dosage indicated on your supplement
  • Combine it with good sleep hygiene: regular hours, fewer screens in the evening, cool and dark bedroom

📝 A concrete routine example

Imagine Claire, 38, who has difficulty falling asleep on busy weeknights. Rather than relying entirely on a supplement, she can build a routine: last coffee before 2 PM, phone placed in the entryway at 10 PM, ten minutes of reading, and her supplement at dinner every night. She notes her bedtime and how she feels upon waking in a journal. After eight weeks, she takes stock: it is this comprehensive view, rather than a single action, that allows her to judge what is really helping her.

🔗 Supplements that pair well with it

Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and to reducing fatigue: it fits naturally into an evening routine. To learn more, read how magnesium acts on our sleep, or our article on the combination of ashwagandha and magnesium against stress.

When to consult instead of supplementing

A supplement can support a difficult period of sleep, but certain signals deserve medical advice above all else. Do not settle for an over-the-counter solution if:

  • your sleep difficulties have lasted for more than three months, at least three nights per week
  • you are sleepy to the point of falling asleep during the day, while driving, or in meetings
  • those around you notice significant snoring or breathing pauses during the night
  • your nights are disrupted by persistently sad moods, intrusive worries, or pain
  • you are already taking medication for sleep, anxiety, or thyroid issues

In these situations, the goal is not to find the right plant, but to identify the cause. Your doctor will be able to direct you, if necessary, toward appropriate care, which includes behavioral approaches to insomnia.

Common mistakes

❌ Expecting an effect from the first night

Ashwagandha is not a sleeping pill. In trials, results were measured after several weeks of daily intake. Judging after three days means stopping before even beginning.

❌ Combining it with sleeping pills without advice

The ANSES advises against ashwagandha for people taking sedative medications. If you are under treatment, speak to your doctor before starting.

❌ Neglecting the rest

Late-night screens, caffeine in the afternoon, irregular schedules: no supplement can compensate for these habits. To go further, discover our 7 strategies to regain restful nights.

Frequently asked questions

❓ Does ashwagandha make you sleep?

Not in the sense of a sleeping pill. Studies suggest a modest effect on sleep onset and sleep quality, likely related to its observed action on stress, which develops over several weeks.

❓ Should I take it in the morning or evening?

If your main goal is sleep, evening, at dinner, is a logical time. In the insomnia trial, the dose was split into two daily intakes. The key remains consistency.

❓ How long before judging?

The 2021 meta-analysis observes a clearer effect over 8 weeks or more. Therefore, count on at least two months of regular intake before drawing conclusions.

❓ What if I don't notice anything after two months?

That is possible: in studies, the average effect is modest and the response varies from one person to another. Take stock with your sleep journal, stop the course if it provides you nothing, and speak to your doctor about your nights rather than increasing the dose.

In summary

1️⃣ A real but modest effect on sleep, according to the reference meta-analysis
2️⃣ Clearer in cases of insomnia, at a sufficient dose and for at least 8 weeks
3️⃣ A supplement, not a sleeping pill: sleep hygiene remains the foundation
4️⃣ Precautions to respect, as highlighted by the ANSES

Sleeping better is long-term work. Ashwagandha can contribute to it, provided it is integrated into a comprehensive and regular routine.
