Ashwagandha and magnesium: can they be combined to combat stress?
Busy days, head spinning in the evening, feeling under pressure? When dealing with stress, two names often come up: ashwagandha, a plant from Ayurvedic tradition, and magnesium, a mineral essential to the nervous system. What if you combined them?
At Pure Lab Nutrition, we explain how they work and how to combine them without mistakes. Studies, sample routines, common errors, and precautions: here is everything you need to know before getting started.

Two allies, two modes of action
🌿 Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic plant
Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is classified as an adaptogenic plant. Its potential in managing stress has been studied in several clinical trials, notably using KSM-66 root extract. Like any plant, it does not have authorized health claims within the European Union: we therefore speak of what studies have observed, within their limitations.
🧂 Magnesium, an essential mineral
Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system, normal psychological functions, and the reduction of fatigue. Combined with vitamin B6, which also contributes to normal psychological functions and reducing fatigue, it forms a classic duo. To understand its role in detail, read How does magnesium affect stress?
What the studies say
🔬 Ashwagandha and stress
In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in 2012 (Chandrasekhar et al.), stressed adults took ashwagandha root extract for 60 days. Stress scores and blood cortisol levels decreased more than in the placebo group. These results are encouraging but involve a limited number of participants and a short duration.
🌙 Ashwagandha and sleep
A trial published in 2019 in Cureus (Langade et al.) tracked 60 adults suffering from insomnia who took 600 mg of KSM-66 extract or a placebo daily for 10 weeks. In 2021, a meta-analysis published in PLoS ONE (Cheah et al.) compiled 5 randomized trials and 400 participants, concluding there was a small but significant effect on sleep, clearer at 600 mg per day over 8 weeks or more, and among insomniacs. To learn more, read Ashwagandha and sleep: what the studies say.
🔬 Magnesium + B6
In a randomized trial published in 2018 in PLoS ONE, 264 stressed adults with low blood magnesium levels took either magnesium alone (300 mg/day) or magnesium combined with vitamin B6 for 8 weeks. Stress scores decreased by approximately 45% in both groups. Among the most stressed individuals, the magnesium + B6 combination resulted in greater improvement than magnesium alone.
Note: We did not find any studies specifically testing the combination of ashwagandha + magnesium. The effects described above concern each ingredient separately.
Can they be combined?
There are no known interactions that contraindicate combining ashwagandha and magnesium for healthy adults. Their approaches are complementary: one is an essential nutrient, the other a plant.

Choosing the right products
🌱 For ashwagandha: check the extract
Not all ashwagandha is created equal. A standardized extract, derived from the root and titrated in withanolides, allows you to know what you are taking. Our ORGANIC Ashwagandha uses the KSM-66 root extract, titrated to 5% withanolides, at 300 mg per capsule. To understand why this is important, read Ashwagandha KSM-66: why the extract matters.
💧 For magnesium: the form and B6
Marine magnesium combined with vitamin B6 follows the duo studied by Pouteau et al. Our Instant+ marine magnesium provides 300 mg of marine magnesium with B6, in a 15-day course in a pocket-sized format. Multi-Magnesium is an alternative for a longer course at home.
Sample routine
✅ At lunch: your ashwagandha capsule
✅ At dinner: your magnesium
✅ In the evening: screens off an hour before bed, a few minutes of slow breathing
✅ During the day: a walk, even a short one, and regular breaks
Follow a course for at least a few weeks before judging, then take a break. You might want to start with just one supplement to see how you tolerate it, then add the second one or two weeks later: this way, you will know which one suits you.
🤔 A practical example
Nadia, 36, an executive, finds it hard to "unplug" in the evening and feels tired at the end of the week. She starts with magnesium + B6 at dinner for two weeks, while turning off screens earlier. Then she adds ashwagandha at lunch. After six to eight weeks, she evaluates her progress and then takes a break.

Common mistakes
❌ Expecting an immediate effect: studies were conducted over 8 to 10 weeks
❌ Multiplying "anti-stress" products that each contain ashwagandha or magnesium
❌ Ignoring the contraindications of ashwagandha, particularly if on medication
❌ Relying solely on supplements without addressing sleep, physical activity, or workload
Precautions
In 2024, ANSES published an opinion on ashwagandha. It advises against its consumption, particularly for pregnant or breastfeeding women, children and adolescents, people with thyroid, liver, or heart conditions, as well as those taking sedative medications. If you are on medication, seek the advice of your doctor or pharmacist.
For magnesium, an excess can cause digestive issues. People suffering from kidney failure must seek medical advice. To learn everything, read Ashwagandha: benefits, dosage, and precautions.
Frequently Asked Questions
❓ Can you take both at the same time?
There is nothing preventing healthy adults from doing so. Spreading them out over two meals (ashwagandha at lunch, magnesium in the evening) primarily helps to better identify how you react to each.
❓ How long should the course last?
Studies on ashwagandha lasted between about 8 and 10 weeks. A course of a few weeks followed by a break is a reasonable approach. Follow the duration indicated on the label.
❓ Does ashwagandha make you sleep?
It is not a sleeping pill. Studies on sleep show a weak effect, clearer in insomniacs and at higher studied doses.
❓ What if I already take a multivitamin?
Check its magnesium and B6 content to avoid overlap. Read Can you take several supplements at the same time?
In summary
1️⃣ Ashwagandha has been studied for stress and sleep, with encouraging but modest results
2️⃣ Magnesium contributes to normal psychological functions; with B6, it is a well-studied duo
3️⃣ Combining them is possible for healthy adults, ideally by introducing one after the other
4️⃣ Respect the contraindications for ashwagandha
