Collagen and Vitamin C: why combine them?

A
Adam DALI

Have you noticed that many collagen supplements also contain vitamin C? This is neither a coincidence nor just a marketing tactic: it is a matter of biology. Without vitamin C, your body cannot produce normal collagen, regardless of how much protein you consume.

At Pure Lab Nutrition, we have combined collagen and vitamin C in our Instant+ Marine Collagen. Here is why this duo works so well together, what studies actually say, and how to easily integrate it into your daily routine.

The key role of vitamin C

Our body produces its own collagen from amino acids like glycine, proline, and lysine. But to correctly assemble collagen fibers and make them strong, it needs an essential cofactor: vitamin C.

In practical terms, vitamin C allows certain enzymes to modify the proline and lysine of forming collagen. Without it, the fibers are fragile and unstable. This is what happens in scurvy, the historical disease caused by a lack of vitamin C, which once afflicted sailors deprived of fresh fruits and vegetables during long voyages.

🧱 A simple analogy

Imagine a construction site: the amino acids are the bricks, and vitamin C is one of the essential tools needed to assemble them solidly. Providing bricks without tools, or tools without bricks, won't allow for proper construction. This is why it is important to consider both.

✅ An officially recognized role

At the European level, vitamin C has several authorized health claims related to collagen. It contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of:

  • skin
  • cartilage
  • bones
  • gums and teeth
  • blood vessels

Vitamin C also contributes to protecting cells from oxidative stress and reducing fatigue.

What the studies show

In 2017, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (Shaw et al.) looked at gelatin (a form of collagen) enriched with vitamin C. Eight healthy, physically active men tested three drinks in rotation containing 0g, 5g, or 15g of gelatin, each providing 48mg of vitamin C, one hour before six minutes of jump rope (a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial):

  • gelatin increased the blood concentration of collagen amino acids one hour after ingestion
  • with 15g taken one hour before short exercise, a blood marker of collagen synthesis approximately doubled

A caveat: this is a small study involving active men with a high dose of gelatin. The authors themselves point out that the marker measured in the blood mainly reflects bone turnover, and not directly collagen in tendons or skin. It primarily illustrates the benefit of providing the "bricks" of collagen and vitamin C at the same time, without confirming visible benefits.

Regarding skin, a 2023 meta-analysis published in Nutrients (26 trials, over 1,700 participants) showed that hydrolyzed collagen improved skin hydration and elasticity compared to a placebo. However, the authors call for larger trials to confirm these results.

Vitamin C on your plate

Our body cannot produce vitamin C: it must be provided daily through diet. The best sources are fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably raw or lightly cooked, as vitamin C is sensitive to heat and oxidation.

Family Examples Our advice
Fruits Kiwi, citrus, strawberries, blackcurrants Eat when you take your collagen
Vegetables Bell pepper, broccoli, cabbage, parsley Raw or lightly steamed
Preparations Smoothies, fresh juices, salads Consume immediately after preparation

How to combine them in your daily routine

  • In the same supplement: the simplest solution
  • With a fruit: kiwi, orange, strawberries, or citrus when taking your collagen
  • In a recipe: a red fruit smoothie with your powdered collagen (find our 5 easy recipes with powdered collagen)
  • Consistency: count on several weeks to judge the effects

👩 A concrete example

Do you take collagen tablets in the morning but often skip breakfast? Rather than adding a new supplement, take your tablets with a kiwi or a glass of fresh orange juice. When traveling, switch to a pocket format that already combines collagen and vitamin C. Simple and no duplication.

Note: if you are already taking a collagen formula enriched with vitamin C, there is no need to add a high-dose vitamin C supplement on top.

Who benefits most from this duo?

🥗 Those who don't eat enough fruits and vegetables

If fresh fruits and raw vegetables are rare on your plate, your vitamin C intake might be lacking. This is the profile for which a formula combining both is most practically useful.

🏃 Athletes

Vitamin C contributes to maintaining the normal function of the immune system during and after intense physical exercise; according to European regulations, this effect is obtained with 200 mg per day in addition to the usual dietary intake. For collagen itself, the Shaw study cited above was conducted on active men, but it remains too small to draw conclusions. To learn more, read Is marine collagen good for athletes?

🧳 Frequent travelers

Quick meals, irregular hours: when traveling, diet is often less varied. A pocket format that combines collagen and vitamin C avoids carrying two products.

Common mistakes

⚠️ Stacking supplements without reading labels: a multivitamin, vitamin C, and enriched collagen can be excessive. Add up your intake before adding more.
⚠️ Thinking more is better: a higher dose does not guarantee a better result; follow the doses indicated on each product.
⚠️ Neglecting diet: fresh fruits and vegetables remain the foundation.
⚠️ Judging too quickly: a few days are not enough to appreciate a collagen regimen.

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Do I have to take vitamin C at the exact same time as collagen?

It is not mandatory. The important thing is to have regular vitamin C intake daily. Taking them at the same time is primarily a practical trick to ensure you don't forget.

❓ Is a glass of orange juice enough?

Freshly squeezed citrus juice is a good source of vitamin C. If your diet is rich in fruits and vegetables, a vitamin C supplement is not always necessary.

❓ Is marine collagen suitable for everyone?

No: it is not recommended for people with fish allergies. In case of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or medical treatment, seek advice from a healthcare professional before starting a regimen.

❓ Can I combine this duo with other supplements?

Yes, provided you check the labels to avoid duplication, particularly of vitamin C. Authorities recommend caution when stacking multiple supplements.
