Spirulina: tablets, powder, or pocket-sized, which should you choose?
Are you looking to get started with spirulina but hesitating between green powder, tablets, and small sachets? Good news: it’s the same microalgae. What changes is how you consume it, and that counts for a lot when it comes to sticking with your supplement regimen over the long term.
At Pure Lab Nutrition, our organic spirulina comes in large jars and pocket-sized formats. Here is how to choose the format that suits you, how to recognize quality spirulina, and the mistakes to avoid when starting out.

The different formats
🌿 Powder and flakes
This is spirulina in its raw state, dried and reduced to powder or flakes. You can sprinkle it over a dish or mix it into a smoothie or juice. Its main drawback: a pronounced algae taste that doesn't appeal to everyone, and an intense green color that stains everything it touches, including countertops.
💊 Tablets
Spirulina powder is compressed into small tablets. No taste, precise dosage, and quick to take with a glass of water. Check the ingredient list: the shorter it is, the more exactly you know what you are taking.
🧳 Pocket format
These are tablets packaged in a small sachet, for a short-term regimen to take anywhere: to the office, the gym, or while traveling. It is also a simple way to test spirulina before committing to a longer regimen.
Comparison
| Format | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Powder / flakes | Integrates into cooking | Strong taste, less precise dosage |
| Tablets in a jar | Tasteless, precise dosage, long-term regimen | Multiple tablets per day |
| Pocket format | Portable, ideal for trying it out | Shorter regimen |

Which format for which profile?
👩🍳 You love to cook
Powder can be slipped into a pesto, a cold sauce, or a flavorful smoothie (banana, mango, pineapple) that masks its taste. Add it preferably without cooking, and start with a small amount to get used to it.
⏱️ You want a simple routine
Tablets in a jar are made for you: no taste, no preparation, a precise dose. Keep the jar next to your water bottle or your morning mug so you don't forget.
✈️ You are often on the move
The pocket format slips into a handbag, a gym bag, or a travel kit. You keep your routine even when you are away from home.

📅 Getting off to a good start, regardless of the format
When first starting out, some people experience slight digestive discomfort in the first few days. The simplest approach is to start with a portion of the dose indicated on the packaging for a few days, then gradually increase to the recommended dose, without ever exceeding it. Take your tablets or powder with a large glass of water, and note the start date of your regimen in the corner of your calendar: this helps you stay consistent and take stock at the end.
Quality first: ANSES recommendations
Regardless of the format, the quality of the spirulina is decisive. In November 2017, ANSES published an opinion on spirulina-based supplements. Its main findings:
- Excluding contamination, spirulina does not appear to pose a health risk at low doses, up to a few grams per day for adults
- The main risk comes from possible contamination: toxins produced by other algae (cyanotoxins), bacteria, or heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic
- ANSES recommends choosing reliable supply chains: compliance with French regulations, traceability, and a clearly identified manufacturer
- Spirulina is not recommended for people with phenylketonuria or those with an allergic background
Good to know: ANSES also specifies that spirulina is not a reliable source of vitamin B12 for vegans because it mainly contains an inactive form. Read Vegetarians and vegans: why vitamin B12 is essential.
🏷️ What to look for on the label
✅ A short ingredient list, ideally spirulina alone
✅ The recommended daily dose, clearly indicated
✅ The name and address of the party responsible for placing it on the market
✅ Precautionary statements (do not exceed the dose, keep out of reach of children)
These notices are part of the labeling rules for dietary supplements recalled by the DGCCRF.
Common mistakes
⚠️ Choosing based solely on the format, without looking at the origin and traceability
⚠️ Starting immediately at the maximum dose: a gradual build-up is more comfortable for digestion
⚠️ Relying on spirulina for vitamin B12 when vegan
⚠️ Combining several spirulina-based products without adding up the doses

Frequently asked questions
❓ Is spirulina in tablets as beneficial as powder?
Yes: a tablet is simply compressed spirulina powder. Given the same quantity of spirulina, the format does not change what you consume, only how you take it.
❓ How can I mask the taste of the powder?
Pair it with strong flavors: exotic fruits, cocoa, lemon, or fresh herbs. If the taste remains a deterrent, tablets are the simplest solution.
❓ Can you take spirulina while pregnant or on medication?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice first. This is the rule for any supplement in case of pregnancy, breastfeeding, ongoing treatment, or for a child.
❓ Should it be taken during a meal?
It is not mandatory, but it is often more comfortable for sensitive stomachs. Breakfast or lunch are good markers to ensure you don't forget your dose.
❓ How should I store my spirulina?
In a dry place, away from light and heat, in its tightly closed packaging. Observe the date indicated on the product.
In summary
1️⃣ Powder for cooking, tablets for simplicity, pocket format for mobility
2️⃣ Quality takes precedence over format: reliable chain, traceability, identified manufacturer
3️⃣ Some contraindications: phenylketonuria, allergic background
4️⃣ Not a reliable source of B12 for vegans
