Hyaluronic acid capsules: are they effective for the skin?

A
Adam DALI

You know it from your serum or day cream. But does hyaluronic acid in capsule form really work? It’s a legitimate question: an ingested molecule must first pass through the digestive system before it can potentially reach the skin.

At Pure Lab Nutrition, we have looked at what the research says. Here is what we know, what we still don't know, for whom this approach makes sense, and how to integrate it into your routine.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule naturally present in our body, particularly in the skin, joints, and eyes. Its unique feature: it retains a large amount of water, which contributes to the plump and hydrated appearance of the skin.

In the dermis, it occupies the space between collagen and elastin fibers, much like a gel filling the gaps in a framework. Collagen provides the structure, elastin the ability to snap back into shape, and hyaluronic acid the water reserve that gives the whole structure its suppleness.

Over the years, the skin contains less of it, which contributes to the loss of elasticity and the appearance of fine lines. Other factors, such as sun exposure, smoking, or very dry air, also affect the skin's hydration and appearance.

Despite its name, it is not aggressive: the word "acid" simply comes from its chemical structure. It has nothing to do with the exfoliating acids used in cosmetics.

Is it absorbed when ingested?

That is the big question. Hyaluronic acid is a large molecule. A review published in 2014 in the Nutrition Journal (Kawada et al.) indicates that, based on available data, ingested hyaluronic acid is absorbed and partially distributed to the skin. The authors also report that it could stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid and the proliferation of fibroblasts, the cells that produce skin fibers.

These mechanisms remain to be confirmed by further independent studies. But they explain why the question of "oral" hyaluronic acid has sparked interest among researchers.

🧩 Why it's not as simple as a serum

A serum deposits the molecule directly onto the skin. A capsule, however, follows the path of everything you eat: stomach, intestine, circulation. At each stage, the molecule may be partially broken down or used elsewhere in the body. Therefore, we cannot reason in terms of "milligrams swallowed = milligrams in the skin": only clinical trials measuring the condition of the skin can determine if an effect exists.

What skin studies show

This same review reports a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in which oral hyaluronic acid increased skin hydration in people with dry skin.

Other clinical trials have been conducted since, mainly in Japan, where hyaluronic acid has long been marketed as a supplement for skin hydration.

🔍 How to interpret these results?

A "randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled" trial is the most robust type of study to test a product: neither the participants nor the researchers know who is receiving the active product. That is a good point. However, a positive result in one trial is not enough to definitively establish an effect: it must be confirmed by other teams on other populations.

Also, keep in mind what these trials measure: skin hydration. They show neither the disappearance of wrinkles nor a "lifting" effect. A result regarding hydration remains interesting, but it must be taken for what it is.

The limitations to keep in mind

  • Studies are often linked to manufacturers: for example, the authors of the 2014 review work for a Japanese manufacturer that produces hyaluronic acid
  • Studies are often small-scale, with varying doses and forms
  • No authorized health claim in Europe for hyaluronic acid taken alone
  • No miracles: the observed effects mainly concern hydration, and they occur gradually

Our take: encouraging results that should be considered as a supplement to a good skincare routine, not a replacement.

Capsules, serum, or collagen: what does what?

What research says Well-established cosmetic use Encouraging trials, still few in number Meta-analysis of 26 trials (over 1,700 participants): improved hydration and elasticity vs. placebo
Time to assess Immediate sensation, as long as it is applied Several weeks of regular intake Several weeks of regular intake
EU claim Cosmetic, out of scope None None

Who can benefit from this?

🙋 Profiles most interested

  • Skin that feels tight despite a good cream, especially in winter or in heated and air-conditioned rooms: hydration is precisely what the trials focus on
  • People who want an "inside + outside" routine and who have already set the basics: appropriate skincare and sun protection
  • Those who travel frequently: the dry air of airplanes and hotels puts the skin to the test, and a pocket-sized format slips easily into a bag

Integrating it into your routine

🤝 With Vitamin C

Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin: this is an official claim. It also helps protect cells against oxidative stress. This is why it is often combined with hyaluronic acid in beauty formulas.

🧴 With the right habits

  • Drink enough water throughout the day
  • Protect your skin from the sun, the primary factor in skin aging
  • Use a moisturizer adapted to your skin type
  • Be consistent: allow several weeks to judge

📅 A day in the life

Morning: gentle cleanser, moisturizer, sun protection, and the capsule with breakfast so you don't forget it. During the day: a bottle of water within reach. Evening: remove makeup without rubbing, then use a richer moisturizer if your skin feels tight. At the end of the course, take stock: a feeling of comfort, makeup that "sets" less, skin that feels less rough to the touch.

Above all, clearly identify your needs: skin that feels tight is not necessarily dry; it may simply be dehydrated. Our article Dehydrated skin or dry skin: how to tell the difference? helps clarify things.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting a "wrinkle-filling" effect: studies focus on hydration, not an effect comparable to injections
  • Judging after just a few days: skin renews itself slowly, consistency is required
  • Abandoning your sunscreen while relying on a supplement: the sun remains the primary factor in skin aging
  • Multiplying beauty supplements without checking for overlaps, especially with Vitamin C
  • Pitting the two uses against each other: the capsule does not replace the skincare applied to the skin, and vice versa

Frequently Asked Questions

❓ Can you take hyaluronic acid and collagen together?

Yes, it is a common combination in beauty routines. Just remember to check the Vitamin C levels if both products contain it.

❓ What time of day should I take it?

There is no proven ideal time. The most important thing is consistency: choose a fixed time, for example, breakfast.

❓ Do the capsules replace my serum?

No. The serum acts on the surface, the capsule from the inside: the two can complement each other in a consistent routine.

❓ Are there any special precautions?

As with any supplement, ask a healthcare professional for advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are on medication.
